Health insurance in Miami, no fine print

Miami-Dade is the county with the most Obamacare enrollees in the entire country: close to 400,000 people. That means you have more options here than almost anywhere — and also more people trying to sell you something. Here's how to tell them apart.

Lots of options also means lots of noise

In Miami there are agents on every corner, radio ads, and people who approach you in the supermarket parking lot. Most of them do good work. Some don't.

Three signs should make you walk away immediately: being asked for money to enroll (Marketplace enrollment is always free), being promised a price before anyone looks at your income, and having your plan switched without being told — that last one is illegal, and it happens more than it should.

Always ask for the agent's NPN number. Mine is 21726482 and you can verify it yourself. An agent who won't give it to you is an agent to walk away from.

Baptist Health and Jackson: check before you sign

South Florida is split mainly between Baptist Health South Florida y Jackson Health System, plus several independent hospitals.

With so many carriers competing in Miami-Dade, networks vary enormously from plan to plan. Two plans twenty dollars a month apart can have completely different hospitals.

Tell me which doctors and which hospital you want to keep, and I filter the plans by that before looking at price. That's the right order.
